What is Indian Passport Surrender?

Indian passport surrender means that after getting citizenship of another foreign country, one renounces Indian citizenship, as the Indian government does not allow dual citizenship. Therefore, anyone who acquires citizenship of a foreign country must relinquish their Indian citizenship and Indian passport.

    If an individual has ever held an Indian passport and has acquired the citizenship of another country, he/she need to immediately surrender their Indian passport. It should be noted that after obtaining foreign citizenship, using an Indian passport for travel will be considered illegal, and a person found doing so will face penalties, as the Indian government does not permit dual citizenship to its citizens.

    In simple terms, Indian passport surrender means relinquishing your Indian passport and citizenship after acquiring citizenship of a foreign country. As the government of India does not permit dual citizenship, it requires its citizens to surrender his/her Indian passport and citizenship after obtaining citizenship of another foreign country. For this, the Indian government provides three months to its citizens. In case they fail to do so, they may face legal troubles and need to pay penalties.

    Surrendering your Indian passport or renouncing your Indian citizenship is a prerequisite to enter India legally. Also, it is a prerequisite for getting an OCI card. After acquiring citizenship of a foreign country, you are required to surrender your Indian passport within three months to avoid any legal issues and penalties.
