If an individual has ever held an Indian passport and has acquired the citizenship of another country, he/she need to immediately surrender their Indian passport. It should be noted that after obtaining foreign citizenship, using an Indian passport for travel will be considered illegal, and a person found doing so will face penalties, as the Indian government does not permit dual citizenship to its citizens.

You need to surrender your Indian passport if you are getting a foreign country's citizenship. According to the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955, it is mandatory to surrender your Indian surrender certificate if you are getting a foreign citizenship to the Indian embassy or the consulate. If you fail to do so, then you might get penalized with INR 10,000/ or can get a jail term under section 12 (A) of the Indian Passport Act.

Surrendering your Indian passport or renouncing your Indian citizenship is a prerequisite to enter India legally. Also, it is a prerequisite for getting an OCI card. After acquiring citizenship of a foreign country, you are required to surrender your Indian passport within three months to avoid any legal issues and penalties.

Hi, I am changing my citizenship to Portuguese, but I do not want to surrender my Indian passport, as after that, my voter ID and other Indian documents will also be cancelled. However, if I surrender my Indian passport outside India, I don't have to do this.
