Why Do I Need to Convert My PIO Card to an OCI Card?

According to the government of India, the PIO (Persons of Indian Origin) card is now merged with the OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card. All the PIO cardholders need to fill out an application for PIO to OCI conversion to travel easily to India, and get all the benefits of the OCI card. So it is important for all the PIO cardholders to convert their PIO to OCI before the due date; otherwise, PIO cardholders will need to apply for a valid visa to travel to India.

I completed my conversion earlier this year from the United States.

One suggestion is to double-check that the details on your passport, PIO card, and old Indian passport all match. I had a small address difference, and the processing center asked me for a clarification document before forwarding my application.

Apart from that, everything went smoothly. If your documents are complete, the process is generally straightforward, although processing times vary depending on the jurisdiction.

I found out about this while checking airline travel requirements before flying from the UK.

The airline representative specifically asked whether I had an OCI card because my PIO card wasn't accepted anymore. Thankfully, I hadn't booked my flight yet.

My conversion application took around six weeks through VFS London. The status didn't change much during processing, so don't worry if it stays "Under Process" for a while.

From my experience, the biggest delay was simply waiting for the application to be processed rather than gathering the documents.

I was in a similar situation as a Canadian citizen.

I hadn't visited India for years and only found out about the PIO changes when I started planning a family trip. I applied for the PIO to OCI conversion through the local service center earlier this year. The process was much simpler than I expected because I already had a valid PIO card.

I still had to upload supporting documents like my foreign passport, PIO card, and proof of address. My application took about five weeks from submission to approval, and I wasn't asked for any additional documents.

I definitely wouldn't travel using only the PIO card now. It's worth completing the conversion before booking your trip.

You need to convert your PIO card to an OCI because after 31 December 2025, all the PIO cards are going to expire, and if they fail to convert their PIO card into an OCI, then to get entry, they need a valid visa. So, to avoid this kind of situation, convert your PIO cards to an OCI card through the OCI services portal.
