PIO to OCI conversion is a process that helps the PIO cardholder to get an OCI card. As per the Government of India, after 31 December 2025, all the PIO cards will become invalid, and they will not be eligible to travel, and may face restrictions while traveling to India.

For the conversion of the PIO to an OCI, you need to follow some of the simple steps given below:

    1. You need to go to the official OCI services portal.
    2. Then you need to select the application type as OCI registration in lieu of a PIO card.
    3. After, you need to fill out the online application forms A and B with all the correct information.
    4. Provide all the supporting documents for the PIO to OCI conversion application.
    5. Then you need to review the application and proceed to pay the required fees for the PIO to an OCI card application.
    6. Book an appointment with the nearest indian embassy or consulate for the verification of physical documents.
    7. Go to the scheduled appointment date, submit your application with all the supporting documents, and submit your biometric data, and submit the application.
    8. After submission, you can track the status of your application, and once your conversion application is approved, it will be delivered to your registered address.

The government of India made the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2005 to merge the PIO with the OCI card. This act allows us to consider PIO cardholders as OCI cardholders, and for the people who have applied for a PIO card, and their application is in process, will get an OCI card. Those people who already have a PIO card need to apply for an OCI card through the process called conversion of a PIO to an OCI card.
