I've been holding an OCI card for several years and recently came across news about the new e-OCI card. I'm a bit confused about whether existing OCI holders are required to convert their current physical OCI card into the new electronic version.
My OCI card is still valid, and I haven't renewed my foreign passport recently or made any changes to my personal details. I travel to India once or twice a year without any issues, so I'm wondering if I need to take any action now or if my current OCI card will continue to work.
I've seen mixed information online. Some articles suggest everyone will eventually move to e-OCI, while others say it's mainly for new applicants or people using OCI miscellaneous services. I don't want to apply for something unnecessarily or risk affecting my current OCI status.
Has anyone who already had an OCI card before the e-OCI rollout received any communication about upgrading? Did you have to submit a new application, or are you simply continuing to use your existing OCI card?
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, or other countries who has already looked into this.
I'm based in Canada and recently renewed my foreign passport.
I contacted my local application center because I wasn't sure whether I had to "convert" my OCI. They explained that there wasn't a separate mandatory conversion process for existing holders. Instead, if you later apply for a reissue or another OCI-related service, your records may be updated under the new digital system as part of that process.
So for now, I'm keeping my existing OCI and only updating information when required.
I'm in the USA and had the same question a few weeks ago.
After checking the recent announcements, I found that my existing physical OCI card is still valid, so I haven't applied for a separate e-OCI. From what I understood, the digital system mainly affects new registrations and future services rather than forcing current OCI holders to replace their cards immediately.
Unless I need to update my passport details or use an OCI miscellaneous service later, I'm just continuing to travel with my current OCI card.

One thing I'd recommend is making sure you're following the current OCI update requirements if you renew your passport.
Even if you don't need to replace your OCI card today, passport updates or certain age-related reissue requirements can still apply depending on your circumstances. Those rules are separate from whether your OCI is physical or electronic. Requirements can change, so it's worth checking the official guidance when your passport changes.
