An Apostille certificate is an official document that is attached to a public document, which verifies the document's authenticity and makes it acceptable for international use in countries that are a part of the Hague Convention. It confirms that the seal, stamp, signature, etc., on a document is genuine. It is a mandatory requirement for specific documents when applying for an OCI card, specifically for those issued in foreign countries.

When I applied for my OCI card, I wasn't aware of the requirement that my documents needed to be apostilled before submission. I had to face a lot of delays in the application process because of this small mistake. I would suggest that everyone get their documents apostilled before applying for an OCI, if you wish to experience a smooth application process.

An apostille is a legalization of your original documents to be acceptable in other countries, for verifying that the documents are completely acceptable to use for official works and purposes. This document helps you to do all the official work with all the legalised documents. You will get the apostille certificate for OCI, to get smooth legal documents, to ensure your documents are verified by the legal government works, and all the information in the documents is correct.

Any document that is issued in a country that is a member of the Hague Convention needs to be apostilled. This can include your birth certificate, marriage certificate, or basically any other document that is related to your Indian origin or your spouse's Indian citizenship.

Here are the documents that you will need to apply for an apostille certificate for OCI. If you are applying based on your grandparents or parents on the OCI card, then you need to get an apostilled birth certificate for OCI. If you are applying for an OCI based on the spouse of a foreign citizen, then you will need to apply for an apostilled marriage certificate for OCI. If you are applying for OCI in India, then you will need to get an apostille certificate for the proof of relationship.

When you get your documents apostilled, you make sure that your foreign-issued documents are considered valid in India. This way, you can avoid the need for further attestation by the Indian embassy or consulate in that country.

When you apply for an OCI card, you often have to submit several documents, like a birth certificate or a marriage certificate, to prove your eligibility. I applied for an OCI card on the basis of my Indian spouse's citizenship. So, my documents were issued in a foreign country, and I had to get them apostilled because without that, my documents were not getting accepted by the Indian authorities. However, once I did the same, the whole process was smooth and easy.

You need to submit an Apostille certificate for an OCI card to make sure that the documents are recognized as genuine and valid to be used in India. Doing this will help you to prevent any potential delays or rejections of the OCI application.
