Is the New e-OCI Card Replacing Physical OCI Cards?

I recently came across news about the new e-OCI Card and now I'm a bit confused about what it means for existing OCI cardholders.

I've had a physical OCI booklet for several years, and I noticed that some recent announcements mention that new OCI applicants receive an e-OCI Card instead of a printed booklet. That made me wonder whether the physical OCI card is being phased out completely.

Has anyone here already travelled to India using only the e-OCI Card? Did the airline accept it without asking for the physical booklet? Also, for those of us who already have a physical OCI card, do we need to apply for the e-OCI separately or is it generated automatically?

Another question I have is whether the physical booklet is still valid if I choose not to download the digital version. I don't want to run into any issues at immigration during my next trip.

I've searched online but found different explanations, so I'm hoping someone who has recently used the e-OCI or applied after the new system was introduced can share their experience.

I know the rules can change over time, so I'm mainly looking for recent real-world experiences rather than assumptions.

I still have my original OCI booklet from 2018 and was worried I'd have to replace it immediately.

After reading the official FAQs, I found that there's no requirement for existing OCI holders to surrender or replace their physical booklet. You can continue using it because it remains valid. The e-OCI is meant to make access to your OCI details easier in digital form.

If you're an existing cardholder, I'd still recommend generating the e-OCI because it's free and gives you a digital backup if you ever need it.

My brother applied for a brand-new OCI card through VFS Houston in July 2026.

Instead of receiving the traditional booklet, he was issued only an e-OCI Card. We initially thought the physical booklet would arrive later, but the consulate confirmed that new OCI applicants are now issued digital e-OCI cards, while existing physical booklets remain valid.

He travelled recently without any issues. Even so, he carried printed copies of important documents just in case. That was a personal choice rather than an official requirement.

I had the same questions a few weeks ago.

I've been an OCI cardholder for almost ten years and recently downloaded my e-OCI Card through the OCI portal. The process was straightforward once I logged into my account using the email linked to my OCI record.

From what I understood, the physical OCI booklet is still valid if you already have one. The e-OCI is simply a digital version of your OCI details and doesn't cancel or invalidate the physical booklet.

I haven't travelled yet, but having the e-OCI on my phone is definitely more convenient than carrying another document everywhere.
