Does OCI Card Expire? OCI Validity, Renewal and Reissue Rules

I’m a US citizen of Indian origin and received my OCI card several years ago. I was checking my documents before an upcoming trip to India and realized that I can’t find an expiry date printed on my OCI card.

This has left me confused about whether an OCI card expires at all. My US passport obviously has an expiry date, but I’ve read that an OCI card is different and may remain valid for life.

My current US passport is still valid, but I’m also planning to renew it next year. I’m wondering whether getting a new passport means I need to renew or reissue my OCI card too.

I’ve come across different information online about OCI renewal. Some people say OCI cards are lifelong, while others mention that you need to update your OCI whenever you receive a new passport. I’m especially confused about the rules for people who received their OCI before turning 20.

For example:

  • Does an OCI card have an expiry date?
  • Is OCI validity actually lifelong?
  • Do I need to renew my OCI card when my foreign passport expires?
  • What happens when I get a new US passport?
  • Is OCI reissue required after turning 20?
  • Do I need to update my OCI if only my passport number changes?
  • Can I travel to India using an OCI card issued many years ago?

Has anyone recently traveled to India with an older OCI card and a newly renewed foreign passport? I’d appreciate hearing what happened in your case.

One distinction that helped me was between OCI renewal, OCI reissue and OCI miscellaneous updates.

OCI isn't generally renewed every five or ten years like a passport. The OCI FAQ describes the card as having lifelong validity, but certain events can trigger a re-issuance or require an update.

For example, a new passport issued after the OCI holder turns 20 can trigger the one-time re-issuance requirement. In other situations, passport details and a recent photograph may need to be uploaded through OCI Miscellaneous Services.

There are also separate rules for minors. If the OCI holder is under 20, the passport and OCI update requirements aren't necessarily the same as they are for an adult.

So if your question is simply “Does an OCI card expire?”, the answer is generally no—the OCI card has lifelong validity. But that doesn't mean you can ignore passport changes or other required updates.

I'd check the current OCI portal before travel because requirements and procedures can change, and an Indian Mission can request additional documents depending on the case.

I had almost exactly this question when I found my old OCI card before a trip to India.

My OCI card was issued more than 10 years ago, and there was no normal “expiry date” like you would see on a visa. I contacted the relevant Indian Mission before my trip because my passport had subsequently been renewed.

The important thing is that OCI validity and passport validity are two separate things. Your OCI status doesn't become invalid simply because the passport you used when applying has expired. But you still need to comply with the current requirements for linking/updating your new passport information.

I also learned that the rules have changed over time, particularly around people who received a new passport after turning 20. That's why I'd be careful with older forum posts saying that everyone must simply carry their old passport and OCI.

If you're asking because you're about to travel, I'd check your OCI status and the latest travel guidance rather than relying on something posted several years ago.

From my experience, the biggest source of confusion is calling it an “OCI renewal.” An OCI card is generally lifelong, so it isn't like a visa that simply expires after a fixed period.

I’m a British citizen and have had my OCI for quite a few years. When I renewed my British passport, I initially thought I had to apply for a completely new OCI. After checking the OCI guidance, I realized the process depends on your age and the circumstances in which the new passport was issued.

The OCI FAQ states that an OCI cardholder generally has to get the OCI card re-issued once when a new passport is issued after completing 20 years of age. There are different provisions for passport changes at other ages.

So I wouldn't think of OCI as having an expiry date. Instead, think about whether your OCI details need to be updated or whether you fall into one of the situations where OCI re-issuance is required.

Also, your foreign passport still needs to be valid for travel. Having a lifelong OCI doesn't mean you can travel with an expired passport.

I'd check the current OCI portal rules for your particular age and passport situation before traveling.
