Can I Travel While the OCI is in Process?

Hi, my family and I will be travelling to India this month, and we are planning to stay there for more than six months. We have already booked the tickets, but our OCI application status is still showing Under process. If we do not receive our OCI documents before we leave for India, what are our other options?

I asked a similar question when I submitted my application through VFS New York. The staff told me that processing would continue even if I traveled, but they couldn't advise me on whether I should travel or which visa I should use.

I ended up postponing my trip because my travel wasn't urgent, but I know two friends who traveled on valid Indian visas while waiting for their OCI cards.

Since visa policies and OCI procedures can change, I'd recommend checking the latest travel requirements before booking your flights, especially if your departure date is close.

My experience was a little different because my OCI was approved while I was already in India.

The status changed to "Printed" a few days after I arrived. Since I wasn't in the U.S. to receive the OCI documents, I had to wait until I returned before completing the remaining steps to receive the OCI card.

The processing itself wasn't cancelled or delayed because I traveled, but it did mean I couldn't collect the documents immediately. If you expect to be away for several weeks, it might be worth planning how you'll receive any notifications or courier deliveries.

I was in almost the same situation last year. I had applied for my OCI through VFS Chicago, and about a month later I had to travel to India unexpectedly.

Since my OCI hadn't been issued yet, I applied for an Indian e-Visa using my foreign passport. I entered India on the visa without any issues and returned to the U.S. before my OCI was ready.

My OCI application continued processing while I was away. The only thing I had to manage was making sure I could receive the OCI documents after returning. Based on my experience, the travel itself didn't seem to affect the application.

OCI card allows foreign nationals of Indian origin to travel to India without any visa or reporting the duration of their stay. But if your OCI card is in process, then you have to apply for an e-visa to travel to India with a valid passport.

Yes, you can travel to India if your OCI application is in process, but you should have a valid visa, like a work visa, a tourist visa, or any other visa, and have a valid foreign passport. If you have all these, then you can easily travel to India while your OCI card is in process.
