I've been following the recent news about the proposed e-OCI system and wanted to ask if anyone knows whether the existing physical OCI cards will remain valid once e-OCI is introduced.
I'm an Indian-origin Canadian citizen and received my OCI card a few years ago after surrendering my Indian passport. I usually travel to India once or twice a year to visit my parents. My current OCI card is linked to my Canadian passport, which is still valid for several more years.
After reading a few online articles, I'm a bit confused. Some websites mention that OCI services may become digital in the future, while others suggest existing cardholders might need to switch to an electronic version. I haven't seen any official communication about replacing the current card, but I don't want to run into problems during immigration or while applying for OCI miscellaneous services later.
Has anyone heard anything from the Indian Consulate or VFS about whether physical OCI cards will continue to be accepted after the e-OCI launch? If an e-OCI system is introduced, would current OCI holders need to submit a fresh application, or would existing records simply be transferred electronically?
Based on my experience, OCI rules can change over time, so I'm trying to stay prepared before my next trip. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has recently contacted their consulate or has reliable information. Thanks in advance.
I'm in Australia and was wondering the same thing after seeing several YouTube videos discussing e-OCI.
In my case, I emailed the consulate about another OCI-related matter, and there was no mention of physical OCI cards becoming invalid. That gave me some reassurance because my family has multiple OCI cards issued over different years.
Based on previous updates to OCI rules, existing documents generally remain valid unless the government specifically announces a replacement process. Of course, every policy update is different, so I wouldn't assume that's guaranteed this time.
I'd keep monitoring official notices rather than making any changes now. If an application becomes necessary in the future, I'm sure there will be a published process and timeline.
I've had the same question because I travel from the UK to India almost every year. I recently contacted the VFS helpdesk while asking about an unrelated OCI update, and they mentioned they hadn't received any instructions requiring existing OCI cardholders to replace their physical cards.
From what I've seen, whenever the Government of India introduces changes to OCI services, they're usually announced officially before any implementation. Until then, I'm continuing to use my existing OCI card and foreign passport together as usual.
Personally, I wouldn't rely on social media posts or unofficial blogs because there's been a lot of speculation. If any transition to e-OCI happens, I'd expect detailed instructions explaining whether existing cardholders need to take any action. Requirements can always change, though, so it's worth checking the official announcements before traveling.

I think a lot of the confusion comes from the fact that e-OCI has been discussed in the media, but many reports don't explain whether it's a proposal, a pilot project, or an officially implemented service.
Until there's an official notification from the Government of India, I don't think anyone can say with certainty whether physical OCI cards will eventually be phased out.
If you're traveling soon, I'd continue carrying both your valid foreign passport and physical OCI card, since those are the documents currently required. Before each trip, it's always a good idea to verify the latest travel and OCI guidance because requirements may change without much notice.
