Digital OCI Card in India: How to Download e-OCI Card Online?

One useful point from the official e-OCI FAQ is that there is a daily download limit. It says an e-OCI card can be downloaded a maximum of five times per day, so don't be surprised if the portal doesn't allow unlimited downloads.

Another issue could be your registered email address. The current OCI system uses the email address linked to your OCI record for login/access. If you've lost access to that email, there is an Email ID Updation facility under OCI Miscellaneous Services.

I would also distinguish between an OCI application and an e-OCI download. If you're applying for OCI for the first time, you still have to follow the normal OCI registration procedure and submit the required supporting documents. The digital card isn't a shortcut around the OCI application process.

For existing OCI holders, though, the e-OCI facility is basically a convenient electronic version of the existing OCI information.

I'd save the generated copy somewhere secure and keep the physical OCI card as well. For an actual trip, it's better to follow whatever documentation requirements the airline and Indian immigration authorities currently specify.

I had a slightly different situation because I had recently renewed my foreign passport.

I initially assumed I could just generate the digital OCI card with the new passport details, but that's not necessarily how it works. If your passport particulars need to be updated under the applicable OCI rules, you should complete the required OCI Miscellaneous Services process first.

After the update was approved, the OCI record reflected the new information.

So if someone is asking "Can I download e-OCI after passport renewal?", I would first check whether their passport update is required and whether it has already been processed.

For someone whose passport and OCI records are already current, generating the e-OCI appears to be much more straightforward.

Also, don't confuse the digital OCI card with a new OCI application. The e-OCI facility is for accessing a digital version of the OCI information already held in the government system.

I would definitely use the official OCI portal rather than relying on an old blog or a third-party website for the actual procedure. The e-OCI facility is relatively new, so some older OCI guides won't mention it.

I downloaded mine recently and the process was much simpler than I expected. I already had an OCI card, so I did not submit a new OCI application.

I logged into the official OCI Services Portal using the email address associated with my OCI record. There is an e-OCI option on the dashboard. From there, my existing OCI details were displayed and I was able to generate the digital card.

There was no separate fee for downloading the e-OCI card. The official FAQ also says the download facility is free.

One thing I noticed is that the details shown on the e-OCI are based on the information already available in the OCI records. So I wouldn't treat it as a way to correct an old passport number or personal detail.

I also saved a copy on my phone and on my computer. The official FAQ says the downloaded e-OCI can be presented digitally at immigration checkpoints and to airlines when required.

That said, I would still carry the physical OCI card when travelling. The e-OCI is described by the government as a digital representation and does not replace the physical OCI card.

My experience was straightforward, but the portal or requirements could change, so I'd check the current e-OCI instructions before travelling.
