Hello everyone,
I'm an OCI cardholder living in Toronto, Canada, and I've been seeing a lot of discussion recently about the new e-OCI system introduced under the updated OCI rules in 2026.
I received my physical OCI booklet several years ago and have used it multiple times for travel to India without any issues. Recently, I came across articles mentioning electronic OCI (e-OCI) cards and digital OCI records, which left me confused about whether existing OCI holders need to submit a new application or convert their current OCI card into an e-OCI. From what I've read, the new rules allow OCI cards to be issued in physical or electronic form, but I couldn't find a clear answer regarding current OCI holders.
My main concerns are:
I'm traveling to India later this year and don't want to face issues at immigration because I missed some new requirement.
Has anyone received official guidance or had recent travel experience with an existing OCI card?
I recently renewed my foreign passport in Australia and checked whether I needed to replace my OCI card with an e-OCI.
From everything I could find, there doesn't appear to be a separate mandatory application process requiring all existing OCI holders to switch immediately. Most of the information seems focused on new applications and digital processing of OCI services.
A lot of confusion may be coming from the fact that the application process itself is becoming more digital, while people assume that means every existing OCI booklet must be replaced.
For now, I continue carrying my physical OCI booklet whenever I travel.
I'm a UK-based OCI holder and had the same concern after reading about the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026.
After looking into it, my understanding is that the government introduced e-OCI as part of the modernization of OCI services and digital record keeping. The rules mention that OCI cardholders may be issued an OCI card in physical form or as an electronic OCI (e-OCI).
I traveled to India in June 2026 using my existing physical OCI booklet and foreign passport. Immigration officers did not mention anything about converting to an e-OCI card.
Based on my experience, existing OCI cards appear to remain valid. However, I would still keep an eye on official OCI announcements because implementation details can evolve.

I'm in California and have been following discussions on several NRI forums.
Many users are asking the same question because the term "e-OCI" sounds like a replacement program. Community discussions suggest that physical OCI cards remain valid and that there is currently no widely reported requirement forcing existing holders to submit a standalone conversion application.
What I've noticed is that some people expect existing OCI holders to receive e-OCI credentials when they apply for future services such as re-issuance, updates, or other OCI-related transactions, but I haven't seen official confirmation of a mandatory conversion timeline.
Until there is clearer guidance, I plan to keep my OCI booklet and monitor official updates.
