Can I Continue Traveling with My Physical OCI Card?

I'm an OCI cardholder living in the UK and have a question about traveling after the introduction of the new e-OCI system. I received my physical OCI booklet in 2022 and have used it for multiple trips to India without any problems.

Lately, I've been seeing news and social media posts about digital e-OCI cards, and now I'm confused about whether I can still travel using my existing physical OCI card. My British passport is valid, and I haven't renewed it or changed any personal details since my OCI was issued.

My next trip to India is in a few weeks, and I don't want to face any surprises at airline check-in or immigration. Some people online say the physical OCI booklet is no longer needed, while others say it's still completely valid. It's difficult to know which information is accurate because there are so many conflicting posts.

Has anyone recently traveled to India using only their physical OCI card after the e-OCI rollout? Were you asked to show a digital e-OCI, or was the physical booklet accepted as usual?

I'd really appreciate hearing from people who have traveled in the past few months. I know official rules can change, so I'm looking for recent experiences in addition to checking the latest government guidance.

My parents recently traveled from Australia using their physical OCI booklets that were issued several years ago.

Neither the airline nor immigration officers asked them to present an e-OCI. After their trip, I looked at the latest information published by the Indian Mission, which explained that existing physical OCI booklets continue to remain valid, while new applicants are issued digital e-OCI cards.

Even though the physical booklet is still accepted, I helped my parents download their e-OCI afterward. It's easier to keep a backup copy on a mobile device in case the booklet is misplaced while traveling.

As always, I'd recommend checking the latest official guidance before your trip because procedures can be updated over time.

I had the same concern before flying from Toronto last month.

I already had my e-OCI downloaded, but I still carried my physical OCI booklet because I wasn't sure what airlines would ask for. During check-in, the airline only requested my passport and OCI details. Nobody specifically asked whether I had the digital version.

From my understanding, if your OCI information is current and your passport details don't require updating, your existing OCI remains valid. If you've recently renewed your passport or changed your personal details, it's worth checking whether you need to update your OCI records before traveling because those situations may have separate requirements.

I traveled from Chicago to Mumbai about three weeks ago using my physical OCI booklet that was issued in 2021.

At airline check-in, the staff checked my valid US passport and my physical OCI booklet. When I arrived in India, immigration accepted the documents without asking whether I had an e-OCI. My experience was exactly the same as on my previous trips.

After returning, I read the official announcement about the e-OCI rollout. From what I understood, existing physical OCI cards remain valid, while the e-OCI is an additional digital version and the standard format for new OCI issuances. Because of that, I didn't feel any pressure to replace my booklet.

I'll probably download the e-OCI before my next trip simply because it's convenient to have a digital copy available on my phone.
