In the UK, the High Commission of India, London, and VFS handle all the Indian passport surrender applications. If any person wants to apply for the passport surrender application, then they need to go to the VFS website and apply for an Indian Passport surrender application by filling out an online application form and uploading all the documents. After that applicant needs to book an appointment with the nearest Indian Mission or post office to submit the application form wth all the supporting documents, and pay the fees for the Surrender of Indian passport.

I went through this process from London last autumn. Like others have mentioned, VFS acted as the application centre, while the High Commission handled the actual passport surrender approval.

One thing that confused me was seeing both VFS tracking and status updates related to the Indian mission. That's normal because different organisations are responsible for different stages of the process.

I was asked to submit a clearer copy of my naturalisation certificate after my initial application. That delayed things by about a week, so it's worth double-checking that all scanned documents are clear if you're applying by post.

Individual cases can vary depending on the documents submitted, so don't compare timelines too closely with someone else's application.

My experience was slightly different because I used the postal application option from Scotland instead of visiting a VFS centre.

The documents were mailed to VFS, and they handled the initial verification before forwarding everything to the High Commission. I never contacted the High Commission directly during the process.

The total processing time was about four weeks, although a friend who applied around the same time received the certificate in just over two weeks. It probably depends on application volumes and whether any clarification is needed.

If you're planning to apply for an OCI card afterwards, keep your Surrender Certificate safely because you'll need it during the OCI application. Based on my experience, it's easier to wait until you receive the certificate rather than trying to prepare everything at the same time.

I completed my Indian passport surrender in Manchester earlier this year after becoming a British citizen. In my case, I booked an appointment with the local VFS Global centre and submitted all my documents there.

From what I understood, VFS Global was only the application collection partner. They checked whether my documents were complete, collected the fee, and forwarded the application to the High Commission of India for processing. The actual decision and issuance of the Surrender Certificate came from the Indian authorities rather than VFS.

My application took around three weeks from submission until I received notification that the certificate was ready. The online tracking showed different stages, so don't worry if it doesn't change every day.

One thing I'd suggest is checking that the details on your British passport match your Indian passport. Small differences in names or dates can sometimes result in additional document requests. Requirements may change, so it's still worth checking the latest guidance before applying.

To get your Indian passport surrender certificate, you need to gather some essential documents for the smooth application processing, which are an appointment letter confirmation, an online application form, two passport-size photos, an Indian passport copy of the front and last page, a Naturalisation certificate, and a VFS declaration form.

The Indian Citizenship Act, 1955, does not allow an Indian or foreign individual to hold dual citizenship. If any individual needs to get a citizenship of a foreign country, then they need to apply for an Indian passport surrender to acquire another country's citizenship. If you are applying for an Indian passport surrender application in the UK, then you can visit the VFS Global website, which handles the Indian Passport surrender applications, and the High Commission of Indian, London.
