As far as I know, OCI cardholders are treated similarly to Indian citizens when it comes to taking admission to Indian universities. However, there are some rules that you should consider.

A friend of mine had a different experience because she applied for a private university instead of a government institution. The admission office explained that OCI applicants were eligible to apply, but the tuition fee structure depended on the category under which admission was granted.

She was advised not to rely on general information posted on discussion forums because admission policies are updated periodically. The university's admissions team provided the most accurate guidance for her specific course.

If you're applying to multiple universities, make a simple spreadsheet comparing eligibility, entrance exam requirements, documents, and fee policies. It made the application process much easier for her family.

Requirements can vary between institutions, so it's always a good idea to verify the latest admission rules directly with each university.

I studied in Australia before applying to a university in India as an OCI cardholder. My course required an entrance examination, and having an OCI card didn't exempt me from meeting the admission requirements.

The application process itself wasn't difficult, but I spent quite a bit of time confirming which quota I was eligible for. Different universities interpreted their admission categories differently, especially for professional courses.

One thing that helped was preparing all my educational documents well in advance. Since my qualifications were from overseas, the university requested additional verification before completing admission.

Processing times for document verification were longer than I expected, so if you're planning to apply next year, I'd recommend starting early.

My daughter is an OCI cardholder from the UK and joined an engineering college in India last year. One thing we learned quickly was that there isn't a single rule that applies to every university.

Some universities had a dedicated OCI/NRI admission category, while others allowed OCI applicants to compete through the regular admission process if they met the eligibility criteria. We contacted each admissions office directly because the information online wasn't always clear.

Apart from her OCI card and foreign passport, we had to submit her academic transcripts, passport-sized photographs, and an equivalency certificate for her overseas qualifications. The university also asked for copies of both sides of the OCI card during document verification.

Based on our experience, it's worth checking the admission brochure for each university instead of assuming the same policy applies everywhere.

This is my advice to every parent who is planning to admit their OCI child to Indian schools or universities: make sure to have all the important documents handy,  including the OCI card and any other required educational certificates.

I suggest that you check the specific institution's website before taking admission to get detailed information, because every university may have its own set of rules and policies regarding OCI admissions.
