Name Mismatch Between OCI Card and Foreign Passport

I recently became a Canadian citizen and received my first Canadian passport. While preparing my OCI card application, I noticed that my name on the Canadian passport doesn't exactly match the name on my previous Indian passport.

The difference isn't huge, but it's enough to make me concerned. My Indian passport shows my full middle name, whereas my Canadian passport only uses the middle initial. Everything else, including my date of birth and my parents' names, matches.

I've read that even small name mismatches between an OCI card and a foreign passport can sometimes lead to delays or requests for additional documents. Some people have mentioned providing a name declaration or additional proof, while others said their applications were processed without any issues.

Has anyone recently dealt with a similar situation? Did VFS or BLS ask for any extra documents because of the name difference? If your application was approved, what documents helped explain the mismatch?

I understand every case is different and requirements may vary depending on the Indian Mission, but I'd really appreciate hearing recent experiences before I submit my application.

I applied from the US earlier this year, and my name mismatch was caused by the expansion of my initials rather than a legal name change.

Before submitting my application, I contacted VFS to ask whether I needed additional documents. They advised me to include a brief explanation and any official records that connected both versions of my name.

My application wasn't delayed, and I never received a request for additional information. Based on my experience, even small differences are worth explaining upfront instead of waiting for the Consulate to ask.

Of course, requirements can differ depending on the Indian Mission, so it's a good idea to review the latest checklist before applying.

My experience in Australia was slightly different. My surname changed after marriage, so the difference was more significant than just a middle name.

BLS asked me to submit my marriage certificate along with the supporting identity documents. They explained that any document linking the previous name and current name would help establish continuity.

The application remained under review for a few extra weeks, but eventually everything was accepted. Looking back, I think including all supporting documents with the initial application would have saved some time.

I had a similar issue when I applied from the UK. My Indian passport included my full middle name, but my British passport only showed the middle initial.

During document review, VFS pointed out the difference and asked me to include a signed name declaration explaining that both names referred to the same person. I also submitted copies of my Indian passport, British passport, and naturalization certificate.

My application wasn't rejected, but it did take a little longer because the Consulate wanted to verify the documents. Once everything was reviewed, the OCI application was approved without any further requests.
