I'm flying to India from Toronto next week and started filling out the e-Arrival Card online yesterday. Everything was going smoothly until I reached the section where I had to upload my passport information. Every time I upload the passport bio page, I receive an error message saying that the document couldn't be processed, even though the file meets the size limit mentioned on the portal.
I've tried uploading both a PDF and a JPEG version, reduced the file size, and even scanned the passport again using a different scanner. The image is clear, and all the details are readable, but the upload still fails. I also switched from Chrome to Edge and tried using my phone, but I keep getting the same error.
I'm a Canadian citizen traveling on an OCI card, and this is my first time using the new digital e-Arrival Card portal. I'm not sure if the issue is related to the document itself or if the portal is having temporary technical problems.
Has anyone else faced an error uploading passport information to the e-Arrival Card portal? Were you able to fix it, or did you have to wait and try again later? I don't want to submit incorrect information or create multiple applications if the problem is on the system's side.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
My experience was a little different. I was applying from the UK and the portal wouldn't accept my passport image until I rescanned it in color at a lower resolution. The original scan was very high quality, but the file ended up being much larger than I expected even after compression.
After creating a fresh JPEG directly from the scanner instead of converting a PDF, the upload completed without any issues.
Since portal updates happen from time to time, technical issues can also occur. If everything looks correct, it may simply be worth trying again after a few hours.
I experienced something similar before traveling from New Jersey. The passport upload kept failing even though the file size was well below the limit. In my case, the issue turned out to be the file name. It contained special characters and spaces because it came directly from my scanner.
I renamed the file to something simple like Passport.jpg, uploaded it again, and it worked immediately. I'm not sure if that's what caused it, but it solved the problem for me.
If you haven't already, you could also make sure the file isn't password-protected or saved in an unusual format.

I had upload errors while applying from Australia a few months ago. Later I realized my browser had an extension that interfered with uploads on certain government websites.
I opened the portal in a private browsing window with extensions disabled, signed in again, and the passport upload worked on the first attempt.
Based on my experience, I'd avoid submitting another application unless the first one clearly failed. If the portal keeps rejecting the document despite meeting the published requirements, it's probably worth checking the official guidance or contacting the support channel listed on the website.
