OCI Card Update: How to Update Passport, Address, Name and Email

One thing I'd be careful about is assuming that an OCI update always produces a replacement physical card.

The official Miscellaneous Services FAQ says that an OCI card is issued for certain services, but change of address/occupation is specifically an exception.

For a new passport after age 20, however, the situation is different. The current guidance says re-issuance is required once after completing age 20 when a new passport is issued, so the facial features can be captured on attaining adulthood.

Also, don't confuse the new e-OCI Card with a replacement physical card. The Ministry says the e-OCI card is a digital representation and does not replace the physical OCI card or change the holder's OCI status.

I'd keep copies of everything you submit and monitor the application through the official OCI status system. Individual cases can be different, and the Mission can request additional documentation.

I went through something similar after renewing my British passport. In my case, I used the OCI Miscellaneous Services option rather than starting a completely new OCI application.

The important distinction seems to be between updating information and actually getting the OCI card re-issued. The official OCI FAQ says Miscellaneous Services cover things such as a new passport issued after age 20, changes to personal particulars, and changes of address or occupation.

For the new passport situation, the OCI guidance says that an OCI cardholder has to get the card re-issued once when a new passport is issued after completing 20 years of age. For subsequent passport changes, there are circumstances where the new passport details and latest photograph can be uploaded through Miscellaneous Services instead.

I uploaded the documents requested and kept my old OCI card and both passports available in case the Mission wanted to see the originals.

I'd recommend checking the current instructions for your specific Indian Mission before submitting because requirements can change.

I had a different situation because I only needed to change my address, not get a new passport-related OCI card.

The OCI FAQ specifically lists change of address and occupation under Miscellaneous Services. It also says that proof such as an electricity bill, telephone bill, undertaking from the concerned person, or rent/lease agreement can be used as address proof.

So I wouldn't assume that every change automatically means a new OCI card.

One thing that helped me was separating the changes into categories:

Passport-related: new passport, passport details and photograph.

Personal details: name, nationality, date of birth or other particulars where applicable.

Contact/residential details: address, occupation and email-related updates.

The OCI portal now also has an Email ID Updation facility under Miscellaneous Services. The e-OCI FAQ says that once an email update request is approved, the new email becomes linked to the OCI record.

I'd make sure the details you're entering match your current passport exactly where the portal asks for passport particulars.
