OCI Card Lost Before Travel – What Should I Do?

I went through a lost OCI situation, and the replacement process wasn't the same as simply renewing a passport. The OCI Miscellaneous Services guidance treats loss or damage separately and currently lists a US$100 or equivalent local-currency fee for reissuance in case of loss or damage.

The official guidance also says the decision on reissuance is ordinarily made within one month from the date the application is acknowledged by the Indian Mission/Post/FRRO. That's not the same as a guaranteed delivery date, though.

Since your flight is September 18, I wouldn't plan the trip around the assumption that the replacement will definitely arrive before then.

Check the status, contact the Mission, and separately find out what valid Indian entry document you could use if the replacement isn't available in time.

Also make sure your US passport is valid for the trip. Your old OCI card number and police report are useful records, but I wouldn't treat them as substitutes for whatever travel documentation Indian immigration currently requires.

I had a slightly different situation. I discovered my OCI card was missing only a few days before my flight to India.

I already had an OCI record and was able to access my details through the OCI portal. I also found out about the new e-OCI card, which wasn't something I had considered before.

The current official e-OCI FAQ says the e-OCI card is an electronic version of the OCI card and can be downloaded through the OCI portal. It also says that an existing OCI cardholder can present the downloaded e-OCI card in digital form at Immigration Check Posts and to airlines when required.

However, I wouldn't assume that simply downloading an e-OCI means the lost physical card issue is completely resolved in every circumstance.

The e-OCI guidance also says that the e-OCI is a digital representation and doesn't alter the existing OCI status.

Because your situation involves a lost card plus imminent international travel, I'd contact the Indian Mission handling your case and explain exactly what happened. Give them your OCI number, US passport details, police report, and travel date.

I would rather get confirmation from the Mission than rely on something a random person on a forum says worked at their airport.

The official OCI guidance specifically lists loss/damage of an OCI registration certificate under Miscellaneous Services. For a lost card, it asks for a copy of the complaint lodged with the police/foreign police department and a copy of the OCI card if you have one. If the original copy of the OCI card wasn't retained, the guidance says that copy doesn't have to be enclosed.

One thing I didn't realize beforehand was the personal interview. The official FAQ says that in loss/damage cases, the service is granted only after a personal interview, with the concerned Mission/Post/FRRO informing the applicant of the date and time.

So if your travel date is close, I'd start the replacement process rather than waiting.

I wouldn't assume the police report itself gives you the same status as an OCI card. It's evidence of the loss, not a replacement travel document.
