e-OCI Registration for Children Under 5 Years Old

My wife and I are Indian-origin Australian citizens, and we're applying for an e-OCI Card for our three-year-old son through the new OCI Services Portal. This is our first time using the updated online system, so we're trying to make sure we don't miss anything before submitting the application.

Our son was born in Australia and recently received his Australian passport. Both of us already have OCI cards, and we've also completed the surrender of our Indian passports. While filling out the online application, we noticed there are several document upload sections, and we're unsure whether all of them apply to children under five.

We're particularly confused about the photograph and signature requirements. Since our son is only three, he obviously can't sign his name. Can we upload a thumb impression instead? Also, did anyone have to provide both parents' OCI cards, foreign passports, and the child's birth certificate, or were additional documents requested later?

Another thing I'm wondering is whether anyone has recently completed e-OCI registration for a child under 5 years old. How long did the application remain under review, and were there any document verification requests from VFS or the Indian Mission?

I'd appreciate hearing from parents who've gone through the process recently. I understand every application is different and requirements can change, so I'll also double-check the latest document checklist on the official OCI portal before submitting.

Our experience in Canada was a little different because our daughter was born before both parents received OCI cards.

The application still went through, but we uploaded extra documents showing our Indian origin, including our surrender certificates and current foreign passports.

The Indian Mission didn't reject anything, but they did request one additional document to clarify a date on the birth certificate. Once we uploaded it, the application continued normally.

Based on our experience, it's better to respond quickly if the Mission requests clarification. Minor applications sometimes receive additional document requests depending on individual circumstances.

We completed the process from the UK for our four-year-old son.

Initially, I uploaded a photo that didn't meet the required specifications, and the application couldn't move forward until I replaced it. After uploading a compliant passport-style photo, everything went smoothly.

One tip I'd give is to make sure the child's name is exactly the same on the passport, birth certificate, and application form. Even small differences can result in queries later.

Apart from that, the online process was fairly straightforward. We just kept checking the status through the OCI Services Portal until it was processed.

We applied for our two-year-old daughter's e-OCI from the USA last month.

The biggest thing we learned was to prepare all the documents before starting the application. We uploaded her foreign passport, birth certificate, both parents' passports, our OCI cards, and our marriage certificate because our surnames were different before marriage.

For the signature section, we used our daughter's left thumb impression since she was too young to sign. The application was accepted without any issues regarding that.

Our application stayed "Under Process" for about four weeks before moving to the next stage. We weren't asked for additional documents, but I made sure every uploaded document was clear and easy to read.
