Yes, a non-resident Indian (NRI) needs a valid Permanent Account Number (PAN) to open their NRO currency account in India. A PAN is an essential document that helps with smooth transactions and financial purposes in India, and to open an account, you will need to get a valid PAN card in India. It is a 10-digit alphanumeric identification number that the Income Tax Department of India issues.

I live in Singapore and recently opened an NRO account for business receipts. Before applying, I contacted the bank's NRI help desk to confirm whether a PAN card was mandatory.

They explained that the documentation depends on the type of account and applicable tax regulations. Since my account was intended for regular transactions in India, they strongly recommended obtaining a PAN card first. It made the process much smoother because there were no follow-up requests for additional tax documents.

If you're planning to receive ongoing income in India, having a PAN card can be useful beyond just opening the account, especially if you later need to file an income tax return or claim tax-related benefits.

My experience in Canada was a bit different. I already had a PAN card because I owned property in India, so opening an NRO current account was fairly straightforward.

From what I understand, banks often ask for a PAN card since interest income or other taxable transactions linked to the account may need to be reported. If you don't already have one, it might be worth applying in advance rather than waiting for the bank to request it later.

Requirements can vary between banks, so it's always a good idea to review the latest account-opening checklist provided by the bank you're applying with.

I opened an NRO current account from the UK earlier this year for my freelance income from India. The bank initially asked for a PAN card because the account would be used for taxable transactions. Since I didn't have one, they told me I could start the account opening process, but the PAN card would eventually be required to comply with tax-related requirements.

I applied for a PAN card first, and once I shared the acknowledgement, the bank continued processing my application. My account was activated after they received all the KYC documents, including my passport, overseas address proof, visa copy, and PAN details.

Every bank seems to have slightly different documentation requirements, so I'd recommend checking directly with your branch before submitting the application.

An NRI can apply for the PAN card application online or offline by applying with all the supporting documents like the proof of address, identification proof, and proof of date of birth. After getting a PAN card, you can easily apply for an NRO account online in India, through which you can manage your foreign income, which you earn in India.
