OCI Transfer Application Timeline Through VFS: How Long Does It Take?

My experience was actually faster, so I don't think there is one fixed timeline that applies to everyone.

I submitted my OCI transfer application after receiving a new passport and received the VFS acknowledgement first. After the application reached the government OCI system, I was able to track it there using my application details.

One thing worth mentioning is that VFS and the Indian authorities have different roles. VFS is essentially the application centre that receives documents and handles submission/collection. VFS's own terms say that it does not make the decision on OCI applications and that processing times are estimates outside VFS's control.

So if the VFS tracker doesn't change for several days, that doesn't necessarily mean the OCI application itself isn't moving.

I would also check your email, including spam/junk folders, because status notifications can be useful when there is a change.

If you're planning travel in October, I wouldn't wait until the last minute. The official OCI guidance says reissuance is ordinarily decided within one month from acknowledgement by the Indian Mission/Post/FRRO, but “ordinarily” isn't a guarantee and individual cases can take longer.

I'd keep monitoring the government OCI status and follow the instructions from your VFS centre if they request anything.

One thing I would check is whether you're actually applying for an OCI transfer/reissue because of a new passport or simply updating passport particulars.

Those can be treated differently depending on the circumstances. The current OCI Miscellaneous Services guidance covers reissuance when a new passport is issued after the holder completes 20 years of age, as well as updating passport particulars and other personal details.

There are also specific rules around updating passport details within three months of receiving a new passport. For example, the current VFS USA information says that certain passport-particular updates submitted after the three months have a different fee and currently lists an 8–12 week turnaround for that service.

So I'd first make sure the service you selected matches your exact situation.

If your application has already been accepted and is showing as under process, I wouldn't submit another application just because the status hasn't changed for a few weeks. That could potentially create more confusion.

If the application goes beyond the applicable published processing timeframe, then contacting the relevant VFS centre or Indian Mission with your application/ARN number would be more reasonable.

And definitely keep your VFS receipt and government OCI acknowledgement. You'll probably need those details whenever you ask about the application.

I went through something similar earlier this year after getting a new foreign passport. My application also stayed on “Under Process” for quite a while, which initially made me think something was wrong.

What helped me understand the process was checking the government OCI status separately from the VFS tracking page. VFS explains that once an OCI application has been submitted to the Embassy/Consulate for processing, applicants should track the progress through the OCI government portal. VFS also says it cannot provide additional status information while the application is with the Embassy/Consulate.

In my case, there wasn't a new document request during the waiting period. The status eventually changed and the application moved forward without me having to resubmit anything.

I wouldn't compare the timeline too closely with somebody else's application, though. Even applications submitted through the same VFS centre can move at different speeds depending on verification and the particular case.

If your application was accepted by VFS and there is no request for additional information, I would continue monitoring both tracking systems for now.

Also check the date on your acknowledgement rather than counting from the day you created the online OCI application. The official OCI guidance refers to the acknowledgement on the online system when discussing processing time.
