OCI Application Put on Hold for Verification — What Happens Next?

One thing that confused me when I applied was the difference between document verification and the subsequent processing of the OCI application.

The official OCI FAQ says applicants have to bring the originals of supporting documents to the relevant Indian Mission/Post or FRRO for prior verification. Once the documents are verified and the application is in order, the application is acknowledged in the online system and the originals are returned.

There can also be additional verification depending on the circumstances of the application. For example, spouse-based OCI applications have a mandatory personal interview during the verification stage.

So I wouldn't read too much into the wording of the status alone.

If your application has genuinely been placed on hold, I'd look for an email or instruction from the Mission rather than assuming you need to restart the application. Keep copies of everything you submitted and any correspondence you've received.

Requirements and procedures can change, so I'd verify anything important directly with the relevant Indian Mission and the official OCI portal.

My experience was different. My application wasn't specifically put on hold, but it stayed at an early processing stage much longer than I expected.

One thing worth checking is whether the documents you submitted actually match the information entered in the online application. The OCI system expects details to be entered according to the applicant's current passport, and supporting documents are verified by the relevant Indian Mission/Post or FRRO.

For example, check things like:

• Name spelling
• Date and place of birth
• Passport number
• Citizenship details
• Indian passport details
• Address
• Documents establishing Indian origin

If your application is based on Indian ancestry, the Mission may need to verify the ancestry documents carefully.

I wouldn't send random additional documents unless they're requested. That could make things more confusing. I'd first check whether there's a specific remark or communication attached to your application.

If nothing is mentioned, you could contact the Mission handling your application and quote your application number.

I had something similar happen with my OCI application from the UK earlier this year. Mine was also showing a verification-related status for several weeks, and initially I thought there was a problem with my documents.

In my case, I had already submitted my original documents for verification, including my British passport and the documents proving my Indian origin. The status didn't change immediately after the verification appointment.

Eventually, I received an email requesting clarification about one of the documents. After I provided what they requested, the application moved forward.

So I wouldn't automatically assume that “put on hold for verification” means rejection. It can simply mean that the application needs some additional checking before processing continues.

I'd keep checking both the OCI status page and the email address you used for the application. The official OCI portal provides an online status enquiry where applicants can check their application using the application ID and passport number.

Also check your spam/junk folder. I nearly missed an email because it didn't arrive in my main inbox.
