Is there a different tax slab for OCI holders working in India OCI holder has Swedish citizenship

I'm an OCI card holder with Swedish citizenship and recently moved to India for work. My employer is based in Bengaluru, and my salary is being paid in India. As I'm preparing for my first Income Tax Return (ITR) in India, I'm confused about whether OCI holders have a different income tax slab compared to Indian citizens.

Some people have told me that because I'm an OCI holder, I'll be taxed differently. Others have said that once you're working and earning in India, the normal income tax rules apply regardless of your citizenship.

I'm also unsure whether my Swedish citizenship affects the tax rates or if only my tax residency status matters. I've heard that the India–Sweden DTAA may help if I also have taxable income in Sweden.

Has anyone with an OCI card and a foreign passport worked in India recently? Were you taxed under the same slabs as Indian residents, or are there separate rules for OCI holders?

One thing I'd recommend is checking whether you still have any taxable income in Sweden. If you do, the India–Sweden Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) may help avoid double taxation, depending on the type of income and your tax residency. It's worth discussing this with a tax advisor who handles international taxation.

I have a German passport and an OCI card. When I started working in India, my employer deducted TDS just like they do for Indian employees. The important factor was whether I was considered a tax resident in India during that financial year. I also reviewed the India–Germany DTAA because I had some investment income abroad.

I'm an OCI holder with Canadian citizenship and have been working in India for the last two years. My CA explained that OCI status itself doesn't create a separate tax slab. The applicable tax rates depended on my residential status and the tax regime I selected, not on the fact that I held an OCI card.
