What is the difference between an Indian Entry Visa and an X Visa?

I’m trying to understand the difference between an Indian Entry Visa and an X Visa because I’ve seen both terms used on Indian visa websites, and I’m not sure whether they refer to different visa categories.

I’m currently living in the USA and am a foreign citizen. My wife has Indian roots, and we are considering spending a few months in India to visit family. I may also need to stay longer if we decide to help with some family matters.

While researching Indian visas, I came across information about the Entry Visa and the X Visa. Some websites seem to use the terms interchangeably, while others describe them separately. I’m confused about which category applies to someone visiting relatives or accompanying an Indian family member.

One detail worth checking is whether you are applying from outside India or are already in India on another visa.

The process may differ. If you are applying from the USA, start with the Indian mission or consular application instructions for your jurisdiction. If you are already in India and want to change your visa category, check with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) about whether conversion is permitted in your particular situation.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has published guidance describing certain circumstances in which a foreign national who marries an Indian national, a person of Indian origin, or an OCI cardholder while in India may be eligible to apply for conversion to an Entry (X-2) Visa. That does not mean every applicant qualifies or that approval is automatic.

I would not book a long stay based only on an assumption that the visa can be extended or converted later.

Also, make sure you distinguish a foreign spouse who is eligible for an appropriate visa from an OCI cardholder. OCI registration is a separate status, and an OCI cardholder is a foreign national, not an Indian citizen.

If you share whether your wife is an Indian citizen, an OCI cardholder, or a foreign citizen of Indian origin, other members may be able to point you toward the relevant official instructions.

In my case, I was researching an Entry Visa because I wanted to stay with my Indian-origin family for longer than a typical holiday. What confused me was that different websites used “X Visa” and “Entry Visa” in different ways.

My understanding is that X is the designation used for certain miscellaneous visa categories, including some family-related cases. The specific subcategory matters, though. You should not assume that every visa with an X designation has identical eligibility rules.

I also learned that the visa issued to a foreign spouse or dependent is not necessarily the same as the visa issued to the principal applicant. For example, accompanying someone who holds an employment visa can involve a different dependent-visa category from joining an Indian citizen spouse.

Before applying, gather the documents that explain your situation, such as your passport, marriage certificate if relevant, and proof of your family member’s Indian citizenship or OCI status. These are examples of potentially relevant documents, not a complete official checklist.

I would also be careful about advice suggesting that an existing tourist visa can always be converted. Conversion is not automatic and depends on the applicable rules and circumstances.

The official Indian visa guidance is the best place to confirm the exact category before submitting the application.

I had the same confusion when I was looking into an Indian visa for my spouse. From what I found, “Entry Visa” and “X Visa” are closely related terms, so they are not always two completely separate options.

The Indian consular website I checked described an Entry Visa as an option for people of Indian origin and certain spouses and children of Indian citizens, people of Indian origin, or OCI cardholders who are not themselves registered as OCI cardholders.

The important part is your relationship and why you are travelling. Simply visiting relatives for a holiday does not automatically mean you need an Entry Visa or X Visa. A tourist visa may cover a casual visit to friends or relatives, depending on your circumstances.

I would first check the visa category descriptions on the official Indian consulate website serving your place of residence. The category name and the documents requested can depend on the particular case.

If your wife is an Indian citizen, I would expect you to be asked for proof of marriage and her Indian passport details, but check the current checklist rather than relying on my experience.

Are you planning a short family visit, or are you hoping to live in India with your wife for an extended period? That distinction may help narrow down the category.
