Can I Extend My Indian Visa While Staying in India?

I’m currently visiting India from the UK on a valid Indian visa, and I’m trying to find out whether I can extend my stay without leaving the country.

I originally planned to stay for around three weeks to visit family, but some things have changed, and I may need to remain in India for another month or two. My visa is still valid at the moment, so I want to understand my options before the permitted stay ends.

I’ve searched online and found different answers. Some people say that visa extensions are possible through the FRRO portal, while others say that certain Indian visas cannot be extended at all.

I’m particularly confused about whether the rules depend on the type of visa. I have seen discussions about tourist visas, Entry Visas, e-Visas, and X Visas, but I haven’t found one clear answer that covers all of them.

A few questions I have:

  • Can a foreign national extend an Indian visa while physically staying in India?

  • Is the process different for an e-Tourist Visa and a regular tourist visa?

  • Do I need to contact the FRRO or visit an office in person?

  • What documents are usually requested for a visa extension?

  • Should I apply before my current visa or permitted stay expires?

I haven’t submitted an extension request yet because I don’t want to assume that my visa can be extended and accidentally overstay.

If anyone has recently gone through the Indian visa extension process, could you share which visa category you held, how you applied, and whether additional documents were requested?

I know that each case can be different, but I would appreciate guidance on where to check the rules that apply to my visa.

I would also be careful about the timing. If your visa is close to expiring, don't wait until the last day to start looking into it.

The e-FRRO portal advises applicants to apply at least two weeks in advance. That is useful planning guidance, but it is not a guarantee that a decision will arrive within two weeks.

Depending on your circumstances, you may need to upload your passport information page, visa details, photograph and documents supporting the particular service requested. The authority may ask for additional information or an interview.

If you entered India on an e-Visa, check the official e-Visa conditions before submitting an extension request. If you hold another type of visa, check its specific extension provisions.

I would use the official portal and contact the jurisdictional FRRO/FRO if the relevant service or your circumstances are unclear. Avoid relying on agents who promise guaranteed approval or an expedited extension.

Which visa do you currently hold, and what date does your permitted stay end? Those two details are more useful than the nationality alone when figuring out what to check next.

My understanding is that there isn't one extension rule for every Indian visa. Some regular visa categories may be extended with approval, while others cannot ordinarily be extended.

For example, the official visa provisions list certain categories, such as employment and student visas, as extendable in India, while tourist visas are listed as non-extendable in that table. Special circumstances and later instructions can matter, so I would not apply a rule from one category to another.

If you have a regular visa and a genuine reason to stay longer, check whether your particular category allows an extension and which authority handles it. You may be asked for supporting documents explaining why you need to remain in India, along with passport and visa details.

I would prepare these documents before starting, but use the current checklist for your category rather than assuming the same documents are required for everyone.

One more thing: don't confuse an application being submitted with an extension being approved. Keep checking official communications and do not assume that a pending request automatically gives you permission to stay beyond your authorised period.

The first thing I would check is whether you have an electronic visa (e-Visa) or a regular visa stamped in your passport.

I looked into this because I had the same question before extending a family visit. The official Indian e-Visa website states that e-Visas are generally non-extendable and non-convertible. So, if you entered on an e-Tourist Visa, you should not assume that you can extend it through the FRRO portal just because you are already in India.

For other visa categories, extensions may be possible depending on the visa type, the reason for the request, and the applicable rules.

The official e-FRRO portal is indianfrro.gov.in/efrro. It explains how foreign nationals apply for immigration-related services online. However, the availability of a service on the portal does not mean every visa holder qualifies.

I would check the exact conditions printed on your visa and the official instructions for that category first. If your permitted stay is ending soon, contact the relevant FRRO/FRO promptly rather than waiting for the expiry date.

Also, remember that a visa's overall validity and the permitted length of each stay are not always the same thing.
