OCI Address Update: Is OCI Miscellaneous Service Required?

I recently moved from one apartment to another in the UK and need to update the address associated with my OCI card. I’m a British citizen and have been an OCI cardholder for several years.

My OCI card itself is still valid, and there has been no change to my name, nationality or passport. The only thing that has changed is my residential address.

I initially assumed that because the OCI card doesn't show my full residential address prominently, I didn't need to do anything. But while checking the OCI website, I came across OCI Miscellaneous Services and noticed that change of address is mentioned there.

Now I'm confused about whether an address change actually requires a formal OCI Miscellaneous Services application.

If I do need to submit one, I'm also wondering what counts as acceptable address proof. I have a recent electricity bill and my tenancy agreement showing my new address. Would either of these be sufficient?

A few other questions:

  • Do I need to update my OCI every time I move?
  • Is the address update done completely online?
  • Do I have to submit my original address proof to the Indian Mission?
  • Is there a fee for changing the address?
  • Will I receive a new physical OCI card after changing my address?
  • How long does an OCI address update normally take?
  • Does changing my address affect my OCI status or validity?

I'm planning to travel to India in a couple of months, so I'd prefer to update everything beforehand rather than discover there's an issue at the airport.

Has anyone recently completed an OCI address update through Miscellaneous Services? I'd especially appreciate experiences from people applying from the UK.

I think the confusion comes from the fact that an address change is an update to your OCI record, not necessarily a request for a new OCI card.

The current OCI FAQ is quite clear that a change of address and occupation falls under Miscellaneous Services. It also says that the OCI card isn't issued for changes of address or occupation.

So your situation is different from someone who needs an OCI card reissued because of a new passport after age 20 or because the OCI card was lost or damaged.

    I'd prepare:

    • Current OCI card
    • Current foreign passport
    • Proof of the new address
    • Any other supporting documents requested during the online application

For address proof, the official FAQ specifically mentions electricity bills, landline phone bills, undertaking letters, and rent/lease agreements.

One other thing: don't confuse an OCI address update with the rules for OCI holders who are normally resident in India. The main OCI information page says such holders should intimate the FRRO/FRO by email when there is a change in permanent residential address or occupation.

If you're ordinarily resident in the UK, I'd follow the overseas OCI Miscellaneous Services procedure applicable to your Indian Mission.

I updated my address from the US and the process was fairly straightforward, although I was initially confused about whether I needed to visit the consulate.

The OCI portal says Miscellaneous Services are applied for online, including uploading the required documents, photograph and signature where applicable. After submission, applicants are required to bring the original supporting documents to the relevant Indian Mission/Post/FRRO for prior verification. The FAQ says you don't need to bring printouts of the application or photocopies of the documents uploaded online.

For my address change, I submitted proof showing the new address.

I wouldn't assume the same document will work for every applicant, though. The official list gives examples of address proof, and the Mission can ask for additional documentation depending on the circumstances.

Also, there isn't a fee for the ordinary miscellaneous update itself. The current FAQ says miscellaneous services for updating details are provided on a gratis basis.

So yes, if you're specifically changing your OCI-recorded address, I'd use the Miscellaneous Services route rather than submitting a completely new OCI application.

Yes, I had to deal with this when I moved within Canada. The important part is that change of address is specifically included under OCI Miscellaneous Services.

I initially thought Miscellaneous Services were mainly for passport changes and OCI reissuance, but the official OCI FAQ lists “Change of address/occupation of the OCI Cardholder” as one of the purposes for which the service can be used.

For address proof, the current OCI guidance mentions an electricity bill, landline telephone bill, undertaking letter from the concerned person, or rent/lease agreement.

I used my lease agreement and kept the original available for verification.

One thing that surprised me was that an address update doesn't necessarily mean you'll receive a brand-new OCI card. The OCI FAQ specifically says a new OCI card is issued for applicable services except changes of address or occupation.

So I wouldn't wait for a replacement card to arrive before considering the update complete.

I'd still check the instructions shown in your OCI account because the Mission handling the application may ask for additional documentation.
