How to Renew OCI Card in New York?

One thing I'd be careful about is the age-related information.

The general OCI FAQ on the government portal still contains language about re-issuance when a new passport is issued after the holder completes 20 years of age and also mentions passport/photo updates at certain ages.

However, the current New York Consulate guidance says that physical OCI re-issuances are no longer required after turning 20 or 50 and that the new system uses passport and photograph updates through the OCI Miscellaneous Services Portal.

Because you're applying in New York, I'd follow the current New York Consulate instructions and the OCI portal workflow rather than relying on an older article that simply says “renew your OCI.”

If the portal generates a special instruction or asks for additional documents, follow that instruction.

I recently looked into this for someone in the New York jurisdiction.

Two things can easily get mixed up:

1. Existing OCI + new passport

This is generally handled through OCI Miscellaneous Services → Passport Particulars Update.

2. Fresh OCI registration

That's for someone who doesn't already hold an OCI and is applying for OCI registration.

The New York Consulate says OCI applications are submitted through the Government of India's OCI portal, with the application process involving VFS for OCI applications in the United States.

For an existing cardholder simply updating passport information, I wouldn't automatically start a fresh OCI application.

Also, keep your old passport and OCI records available because the online system may ask you to authenticate your existing OCI information.

The first thing I'd clarify is that “OCI renewal” isn't always the correct description.

If you already hold an OCI and have simply received a new US passport, the OCI portal has a Passport Particulars Updation service under OCI Miscellaneous Services.

The current Consulate General of India in New York guidance says that when a new foreign passport is issued, OCI holders must upload their updated passport particulars and a recent photograph through the OCI Miscellaneous Services Portal within 90 days of receiving the new passport. The New York guidance also says that physical OCI re-issuances have been eliminated under the updated system.

So I would start with the official OCI portal rather than immediately submitting a fresh OCI application.

The process involves logging into the OCI Miscellaneous Services section, authenticating your existing OCI profile, selecting the relevant update service, uploading the requested documents, and submitting the application.

I have renewed my OCI through the official OCI services by selecting the miscellaneous services and completing the online application form, entering all the details correctly. Then, I uploaded the documents for my application, paid the online fees, and submitted the application online. I then sent the application to the application centre for document verification. After a week, I received my renewed OCI card in New York.
