e-OCI Card Verification at Indian Immigration – Recent Experiences

I'm flying from Vancouver to Delhi later this month and was hoping to hear some recent experiences with e-OCI card verification at Indian immigration.

I recently downloaded my e-OCI after logging into the OCI Services Portal. From the latest announcements, it appears that new OCI holders can use the digital e-OCI along with their valid foreign passport at Immigration Check Posts, and existing physical OCI booklets remain valid as well.

My biggest question is what actually happens after landing in India. Has anyone gone through immigration recently using the e-OCI? Did the immigration officer simply scan your passport, or did they also ask to see the e-OCI on your phone? I still have my physical OCI booklet, but I'm trying to understand whether people are experiencing any delays or additional verification because the system is still fairly new.

I recently entered India through Mumbai after flying from Dubai.

The officer requested both my passport and the e-OCI. I had saved the e-OCI as a PDF and also carried a printed copy just in case. The printed copy wasn't needed.

The process felt very similar to previous trips with the physical OCI booklet. The only noticeable difference was that the officer looked at the digital document instead of the booklet.

From what I observed, immigration officers seemed familiar with the new system. My entire verification was completed in around three minutes.

I landed in Bengaluru from London about ten days ago.

My experience was slightly different. The immigration officer mainly checked my British passport first and then asked if I had my OCI available. I showed the e-OCI on my phone, and that was enough.

The entire verification took only a few minutes, although the passenger ahead of me was asked additional questions because their passport details hadn't been updated after renewal.

One thing I'd recommend is checking that your passport information in the OCI portal is current before you travel. It may help avoid unnecessary questions if your passport has recently changed.

I arrived at Delhi IGI Airport from New York on Air India last week.

Immigration was actually much smoother than I expected. The officer first asked for my U.S. passport and then requested my e-OCI. I had already downloaded it to my phone, so I opened the PDF immediately.

The officer compared a few details on the screen, scanned my passport, and completed the process in less than two minutes. There weren't any questions about why I was using the digital version.

I also carried my physical OCI booklet, but nobody asked to see it. Based on my experience, having the e-OCI downloaded offline is important because airport Wi-Fi isn't always reliable.
