No, marrying an American does not guarantee you American citizenship because to get US citizenship, you have to apply for a green card through the entire legal application process and document submission.

If you're thinking about your Indian documents as well, remember that Indian citizenship doesn't allow full dual citizenship. If you later become a U.S. citizen, there may be separate requirements related to your Indian passport, passport surrender, and OCI eligibility.

Those steps happen only after naturalization, so it's worth checking both U.S. immigration guidance and the latest Indian consular requirements when the time comes. Requirements can change, and individual situations may differ.

I think this is one of the most common misconceptions. My cousin assumed marriage alone was enough, but that's not how it worked.

The U.S. government still reviews eligibility, background checks, and documentation. In their case, they first received a conditional Green Card because the marriage was relatively new. Later, they had to apply to remove the conditions before moving toward citizenship.

Processing times varied depending on the workload, so it's difficult to compare timelines with someone else's case.

I went through the process a few years ago after marrying my wife, who is a U.S. citizen.

Marriage itself didn't make me a U.S. citizen. We first filed for a marriage-based Green Card, submitted our marriage certificate, identity documents, financial evidence, and proof that our relationship was genuine. After receiving permanent residence, I had to maintain that status before becoming eligible to apply for naturalization.

There was an interview, and we were asked questions about our relationship and supporting documents. Based on my experience, it's definitely a process rather than an automatic benefit.

If your relationship is legitimate and you have stayed together for more than 2 years, then you can apply for a US card and get American citizenship. But to get all this, you must clear all the conditions, which include finances, learning the English language, and accommodation.

Yes, you cannot get a green card by marrying an American citizen under certain conditions if you are sponsored by a family member, which can your spouse, employer. You can also get a green card by marrying a U.S. citizen spouse.

You cannot get American citizenship by marrying a US citizen. But it doesn't mean that you will get it easily by adding a route to naturalization, but it also does not help most people in common cases. A spouse of a US citizen can qualify for naturalization under the 32-year rule if they stayed together for 2 years, then they are eligible to a[ply for US citizenship.

To marry an American citizen, you need to fill up two forms to get a green card which is Form I-130, which is a petition for an Alien Relative, and Form I-4858, which is for an Application for Adjustment of Status.
